The MoLo-sation of the world. A report from Arctic15.

We heard it at OuiShare Fest last week in Paris, and we heard it at Arctic15 in Helsinki today: “mobility as a service” is the new buzz-phrase when it comes transportation and logistics. From global player Uber to Estonian startup Taxigo, participants at Arctic15 understand that it’s all about solving problems and maximising under-utilised transportation capacity.

Uber is already changing how we move around cities, with one million rides globally per day, as pointed out by Alexandre, Head of Western Europe Expansion. But it certainly does not stop at getting you from A to B. With #ubericecream, an Uber driver will actually bring you fresh ice cream to the office faster than it melts. It is certainly possible to have fun whilst solving problems!

It was also clear that the mobile phone, a key “mobility” driver, is a central focus for many of the start-ups attending the event. As fellow Swedish FinTech company Klarna’s co-founder Niklas Adalberth reminded us, mobile conversion is still significantly below desktop conversion. This is a real challenge, which must be addressed as consumers move increasingly to mobile devices for shopping. Making the mobile experience as seamless as possible is therefore a top priority. Here, merchants need to offer payment options with high security and convenience, which do not require users to entry lengthy credit card numbers.

Arctic15 did a great job of bringing together an exciting mix of start-ups, corporates and investors across a broad range of businesses.

I was personally excited by the accessibility of 3D printed objects, as heralded by Launzer.com, smart modular co-working spaces by Smartblock and interactive night lights for children, as imagined by LeeLuu.

Yet another interesting startup, and winner of the Arctic15 pitch competition, is Fourdeg, which focuses on energy efficiency in buildings.

So, there really was something for everyone with an interest in the start up scene at Arctic15.

And the Finns certainly went “mobile” in style, with Tesla putting in a sleek appearance at the dockside location where the Arctic15 event was held.
